Haiti may be a tourist destination but it is home to some of the poorest people in the world. The small Island nation was already in the grips of the global food crisis when it was repeatedly slammed by a succession of tropical storms last month, bringing destruction and loss of life in its path. TEAR Fund has responded by giving  $10,000 to alleviate the suffering of children and families in  Haiti.

More than 650 Kiwis sponsor children in Haiti through TEAR Fund’s partner Compassion International and all projects have been affected by the storms.

In the Artibonite region (Gonaives), waters rose up to 3m forcing residents to take refuge on their roofs. The storms also destroyed what little infrastructure there was. Prior to the devastating series of storms, the people of Haiti were already in the grips of a food crisis but these storms have shattered all hopes of harvesting its rice crop, further compounding miseries there. Compassion has assessed the needs and will use the $10,000 aid money where most needed.

This disaster comes on the back of others such as the flooding in India’s state of Bihar, to which TEAR Fund responded by giving $80,000 to disaster relief efforts.Money contributed was given from TEAR Fund’s general disaster fund. By giving to this fund, you allow TEAR Fund to respond quickly to disasters without launching an appeal.
